When he got back home to North Kenmore Avenue, something wasn't right. The apartment was eerily silent. "Doll?" His voice echoed. Suddenly, an itch of panic crawled over him. What had happened at Mr Alfred did not mean it would happen here. Where was she? Then he heard her. She was in the bathroom, sitting on the floor. Jay Jay dropped his tool bag and rushed over to her. Oh Jeez, let her be okay.
"I⦠I⦠"
Jay Jay wasnât sure if she was trying to say anything or just panting.
"Doll. Oh God. Are you having the baby?"
He wasnât expecting this for another week or so. She had told him as much. She was able to speak in between the contractions. "Time to go, Jay Jay. I counted. 2 minutes and 1 minute."
He picked her up. She was surprisingly heavy. Step by step they trudged, only stopping during contractions, while he supported her under the arms. "The bag," she gasped.
"What bag?"
She cringed, gasped and sighed as the contraction came, waiting before she spoke. Her eyes squeezed shut in pain. âThe hospital bagâ, she said, and pointed to a bag near the bedroom closet door, a leather weekend bag which he'd never seen before. Another goddamn bag! Didnât she have anough?
She walked 3 steps during the gaps, doubled over in pain until they got to the van. It was way more roomy than the Camaro. He threw the bag into the front passenger seat. No time to even open the trunk. He put the lights on and drove all the way as steady as possible, no lurching, sharp turns or sudden braking. Dallas slumped in the back seat, groaning, with her eyes shut. The mascara had run all over her eyes. He wished he could have helped her more. He regretted every moment of working 6 days a week and all day long. He hardly had spent any time with her in the last few months. Oh God. He gripped the steering wheel, the leather felt hard, sweaty and cold, like his wifeâs skin had felt on the way out to the car. The guilt chipped away at him. He kept checking the rear view mirror all the way.
As he checked her in, Dallas was given a wheelchair and she collapsed gratefully into it, leaning forward and panting. A nurse gave him forms to fill, while he sat in a waiting room. The walls were covered in alphabet and number cutouts in bright colors, in between posters about breast feeding and polio vaccines, showing laughing babies and parents. He lion-yawned and tears filled his eyes.
"How is daddy?"
He looked around. "Wutâ?â He had been called a daddy by a stranger.
"Yes, you. You're going to be a daddy soon. Whatsmatter?"
"Oh. Yes. That's me. Nothing to eat all day and an incredibly early start," he said.
The nurse took the forms away from him.
"Well, you might have to get used to that. Soon there'll be no night or day."
He didn't think that was meant to be a joke.
